摘要:近年来,内容依托教学法作为一种语言与内容有机融合的教学模式受到学界关注。鉴于内容依托教学法在提高学习者语言能力和扩展学习者学科知识方面的巨大潜力,专家学者对内容依托教学法的研究也逐渐深入。

1.1 Background of the study研究背景
Driven by the changing demand of society, foreign language teaching methodshave experienced great changes. In order to meet the needs of cultivating versatiletalents, foreign/second language teaching has started to focus on the integration oflanguage and content instead of language only in recent years. Educators and teachersintend to adopt various ways of teaching not only to improve students' languageability, but also to help them comprehend the academic subject matter. Of all themethods and approaches, CBI (Content-Based Instruction) seems to be the mostdynamic and promising, and it is exerting increasing influence.CBI is an integration of language and content. Krashen (1982) holds that incontent-based instruction students can acquire the content of the subject matter withcomprehensible input, and simultaneously increase their language skills. Since the1980s, CBI has drawn great attention from the academic circle. Along with itsincreasing and constant development, the studies on CBI have developed in China aswell. Dalian University of Foreign Languages took the lead in a systematic reform ofcontent-based courses on English majors in the lower division in 2007. Based on itssuccess, a systematic reform of content-based courses about literature and linguisticshas been carried out for English majors in the higher division.As the major courses for English majors in colleges and universities in China,literature courses occupy an important position not only in improving students'language ability, but also in helping them increase their motivation, promote literacydevelopment, explore academic subject matter, and enhance critical thinking.Meanwhile, the literature courses play an important role in the quality-orientedEducation. Thus,the core position of literature courses should not be shaken. However,the conventional literature courses are literary knowledge-based courses. They arefaced with uncertainty due to inadequate attention in many colleges and universities inChina. At present, the content and teaching hours of literature courses (British andAmerican Literature courses) in many colleges and universities have been reducedand compressed. Apart from that, more and more problems of conventional LKBliterature courses like History of British and American Literature have beendiscovered regarding course design, teaching materials, teaching methods, etc. Mostof the students attending the conventional LKB literature courses leam by rote. Theysimply try to memorize the authors and the names of literary works, yet few studentsread literary works,let alone appreciate and analyze the works. Obviously, thestudents' language skills could not be adequately improved by learning suchconventional LKB literature courses as History of British and American Literature.In order to achieve the optimal curriculum integration, Dalian University ofForeign Languages has initiated a series of compulsory courses for English majors inthe higher division.
